In Greek mythology, Aquarius is often associated with the mythological figure Odysseus, king of Ithaca, whose story is told in the Greek myth of the Trojan War, collected in the epic poem The Odyssey by the classical author Homer. Odysseus is represented carrying the «jug of the winds» given by the god Aeolus to Ulysses, which contained all the contrary winds that could prevent him from returning to Ithaca. The aquarius sign is related to the air element, misinterpreted and later confused by its name, in the representations they mistakenly began to identify water falling from the jug instead of air.
